There have been recent upgrades to laser scanner technology that address inherent limitations the scanners have in with items such as reading a barcode through plastic shrink-wrap or reading bar codes are damaged or those that are printed on flexible materials. Improved technologies have removed the prior limitations and have also made reading 2D barcodes easier. The 2D barcodes mean manufacturers needed to make a return to conventional area-scan readers to overcome the depth of field limitations.
