A new advance in minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery has been announced as having received FDA clearance; the da Vinci Fluorescence Imaging Vision System has received clearance to be used in gallbladder surgeries. With this technology, the surgeon is equipped with a specialized video camera along with a glowing dye that allows the surgeon to view the blood is flowing through the vessels and tissues.
This device is expected to eventually be utilized for other minimally invasive surgical procedures. With this device, the surgeon sees blood flow as green and tissues that have no discernible blood flow as gray.
The ability to view blood flow in real time and providing the surgeon the ability to capture real time images of the duct system can lead to better outcomes for the patient. When it comes to gall bladder surgery, unintentional damage to the bile duct is one of the major surgical challenges that physicians face and one of the most common complications following the surgical procedure. The reason for this is that the bile duct can easily be mistaken for the cystic duct and that can lead to an inadvertent severing of the common duct. The new technology makes it easier for the surgeon to identify the correct duct.
Intuitive Surgical, the manufacturer of the technology is considered the global leader in robotic-assisted, minimally invasive surgical products.
