According to a Wall Street Journal article, the former head of robotics at Google, Andy Rubin, has paired up with the chairman of Foxconn, Terry Gou, to work on technologies that will speed up robot technologies in warehouse settings.
Robot technologies in warehouse settings can perform many of the tasks currently performed by humans, but at a much faster rate. With the advent of newer and faster technologies and upgrades, robot technology has also been fitted with software and upgrades that allow for “touch operations.” The touch operations give the robotic arm the ability to sense even minute changes in a manufacturing part, for example, that it may be working with on an assembly line. This technology allows for the line to be stopped while adjustments are made which can prevent manufactured parts from making it through the entire manufacturing line before defects are discovered.
Machine vision is also a major component in many of the manufacturing robotic technologies. Machine vision allows for an employee to input specifications for particular manufacturing processes which are then transmitted to the machine vision device on the manufacturing floor. Machine vision can be utilized in tasks such as assembly of parts on a manufacturing line to agricultural settings in which the machine vision can pick fruit or weed the planted rows.
