Choosing A Barcode Printer
High Resolution Lenses for machine vision, instrumentation, inspection and vibration-sensitive applications. Standard and custom hi-res lens assemblies.
Owners of barcode scanners understand the importance of having a barcode printer; these printers come in myriad shapes, sizes and at various price points.
As a general rule, laser and inkjet printers can’t automatically print barcodes; an add-on printer module is usually necessary to provide barcode print functionality. These add-ons though sometimes offer a limited number of symbolizes that can be read.
Organizations that utilize thermal barcode printers know they support multiple symbolize and this makes for better barcode interpretation. There are two different types of thermal barcode printers, direct thermal or thermal transfer. With a direct thermal print the barcode is transferred and printed directly onto the label. A thermal transfer scanner uses a ribbon and print head to etch the barcode onto a label. The ribbons in direct transfer barcode printers need to be changed frequently and those used in a manufacturing environment need to be prepared for downtime if using a direct thermal barcode scanner. The direct thermal printer is faster than the thermal transfer types and are particularly useful in hospital settings.
With a thermal transfer barcode printer the barcodes can be printed on a wider array of materials than can a direct printer. Before making a purchase of a barcode printer you do need to know what type of material you will be transferring the barcodes to. The larger model barcode printers sometimes offer the functionality to switch between direct and thermal transfer printing.
In the past organizations that utilized barcode scanning technologies had to purchase preprinted barcodes from the manufacturer and that added to the bottom line pricing of using the technology. Being able to print barcodes on site, and even those that can utilize radio frequency identification devices (RFID) embedded in them is also possible.
