The medical field is seeing many advancements in early detection of several neurological conditions in newborns. Among the diagnoses are birth asphyxia, neonatal seizures, brain malformations, stroke and hydrocephalus just to name a few. The causes of said conditions can range from pre-mature birth to congenital malformations to genetic malformations.Neo Natal Care

As much as early detection is important, keeping up with technology to detect these conditions is equally as important. Advances in non-invasive procedures are keeping pace, as is the equipment designed for more specific abilities.

One said procedure, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive, non-ionizing technique that allows bedside in-vivo monitoring of changes of tissue chromophore concentrations and has been widely used in the study of both adult and neonatal brains.

Researchers from University College London, in cooperation with the Institute for Women’s Health and the neonatal unit of the University College London Hospital Trust, designed and tested the system, known as CYRIL (cytochrome research instrument and application).

CYRIL was able to simultaneously measure cerebral changes in tissue oxygenation and hemodynamics by estimating the changes in hemoglobin concentration. The portable system also tracked oxygen utilization by measuring the oxidation state of cytochrome-c-oxidase (CCO), which is responsible for more than 95 percent of oxygen metabolism in the body.

With such major advancements in technology, having the correct lens for this type of specific equipment is as important as the mechanism itself. Non-invasive systems will continue to be developed, and along with that, a custom lens designed by Universe Kogaku for each unique piece of equipment is equally as important.

At Universe Kagaku, lenses are designed and manufactured for uses in Medical Imaging, Automotive Industry and Military applications. UKA also carries standard and custom lens assemblies for scanners, CCTV, CCD/CMOS, surveillance systems, machine vision and night vision systems.
