Researchers involved in microscopy and advanced microscopy technology are setting out to find ways to improve scientists’ ability to understand and track the processes of HIV and its infection progression. Through this project researchers from the Heidelberg University will begin studying the virus, which has impacted more than 35 million people worldwide.
One of the issues with treating this disease is that as it progresses it changes its molecular structure meaning physicians are continually having to adjust the patient’s medications. Because of this, new strategies to treat patients are necessary. The technology helps researchers understand how the “virus functions and propagates so they can target research to develop methods for both diagnosis and treatment.”
Researchers have been focusing on the T-cells, which are impacted by the virus. To better understand the virus, researchers are using a fluorescent light microscopy. This technology provides an improved image that allows the biological structure of the virus to be tracked and reconstructed in 3D “super resolution.” By selectively controlling the synthesized fluorescent probes researchers are able to view and label the proteins that make up the virus.
Using light sources that utilize various wavelengths and outputs that can be attuned to fluorescent dyes also helps the researchers pinpoint and track the viruses as they travel throughout the body.
