Some while ago, researchers at Sandia National Laboratory, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, conducted a study to see if the combination of blue, red, green and yellow laser lights, which would product white light, would be too harsh for consumers. The study examined white light from one of five different sources: LEDs producing warm, cool, and neutral light; a tungsten-filament incandescent light bulb; and four lasers tuned to produce white light. Participants reported no significant difference between any of the lighting options.
So what was the significance of this study? The researchers from Sandia believed that the findings could lead lighting engineers to develop a host of new options in laser-based home and industrial lighting. One of the results was a new generation of white headlights designed for BMW.
BMW’s laser headlight system combined three blue lasers per headlight for a total of twelve on a standard four headlight BMW. They mounted the three lasers in a triangular pattern to shine onto small mirrors. The lightbeam was then redirected into a lens that contained yellow phosphorus which emits an intense white light when excited by the blue lasers. That light was then directed to the reflector that pushed the light 180 degrees from the headlight onto the road ahead. These headlights turned out to be 1000 times brighter than LED headlights.
