Lockheed Martin recently demonstrated its 30kW electric fiber laser and it proved to be a “step forward toward deployment of a mission-relevant laser weapons system for air, land and sea military platforms.”
The laser is one of the highest power laser documented that can retain both its beam quality and electrical efficiency during deployment, Lockheed officials were quoted as saying.
Researchers used a spectral beam that combined beams from myriad fiber laser modules. Each of the beams operated on a unique wavelength that filtered into a device that combined them into a single powerful, high-quality beam. Another plus to the technology was that it used 50% less electricity than other previously deployed solid-state laser technologies.
Previously deployed lasers were viable for target acquisition, tracking and destruction but because of the previous laser inefficiencies and the sheer size, these were not viable for military use. The new laser devices are receiving buy in from military agencies.
