For many years, medical professionals have understood the issues that can arise from chronic exposure to UV and near-UV rays as it relates to diseases of the eye including cataracts and macular degeneration. Merely stepping into a shaded area will not protect your eye from the UV rays/radiation especially if you’re in an area that is prone to glare such as a desert, snow, water or other highly reflective surface. Eye care professionals urge individuals to invest in a high quality pair of sunglasses that are designed to meet specific criteria for sun protection.
Lenses and the protection they provide vary by manufacturer as well as the style and type of frame and prescription an individual may require. The best types of lenses are those that wrap around the head to provide protection from UV rays coming in through the sides. Wrap around sunglass styles should be fit to “hug” the face to decrease the instance of light seeping through under the cheekbones or at the eyebrow level.
When looking for lenses you want to find a lens that provides 100% protection from UV-A and UV-B rays.
