People use their smartphones for everything from reading email to managing their Facebook and Instagram accounts to snapping photos and videos. When the new iPhone 5S surfaced, it allowed users to take slow-motion recordings, identifying a new market in smartphone usage.
Toshiba recently announced a new 8MP CMOS BSI sensor which can be used in smartphones and tablets as a result of the move by Apple.
This new, higher performing CMOS sensor will allow users to shoot video at high frame rates in 720p HD. Though many smartphones already offer 720p recordings, these CMOS sensors put a large strain on power consumption and the amount of light each is able to capture per frame, resulting in underexposed videos. Toshiba’s new CMOS sensor addresses those issues by reducing power consumption by 85 percent and increasing the amount of light that can be captured in each frame by four times!
This Toshiba sensor is currently expected to be available for mass production by April of 2015 so most smartphone users will not see these improvements for quite some time.
