Researchers have developed a vision guided robotic inspection system that assists in manufacturing processes by providing automated inspection and computer-aided decision making. The system integrates an R12 articulated robot arm and an industrial camera that operates with software to calculate algorithms that work together to increase the quality of the products being manufactured while decreasing labor costs.
A CMOS image sensor embedded in the robot captures the images at a frame rate of ten-frames-per-second at full resolution and at a rate of 89 frames per second at lower size and resolution.
The camera has an electronic rolling shutter which allows it to capture images of rotating parts during the manufacturing line’s automated inspection process. Currently the technology operates on proprietary software that provides access to Windows operating systems and DLLs.
The vision guided robotic technology is capable of inspecting 100 percent of parts and can also make multi-dimensional, high-speed measurements during the inspection process which can be completed in fewer than sixty seconds. This robot technology is also equipped with a graphical user interface which allows for multiple part inspections to be undertaken at one time. The robot has a small footprint, a necessity for space-cramped manufacturing floors.
It is estimated that an owner could see a return on investment in the purchase in less than a year, based on the company’s labor rate.
